Quantitative links between gas exchange of leaves and photosynthetic biochemistry
Susanne von Caemmerer
Susanne is Professor of Molecular Plant Physiology at Australian national university. Susanne’s research focuses on the function of photosynthesis and stomata, with an emphasis on the mathematical modeling of the CO2 acquisition of plants, the biochemistry of photosynthesis, and regulation of CO2 diffusion in leaves. Her research is including the biochemistry of C3 and C4 photosynthesis. She has worked in biochemistry, molecular biology and plant physiology, in particular on the seamless integration of mathematical modelling and experimental verification. She was part of the team that developed a mathematical model for C3 photosynthesis, which is now used worldwide as the basis to study C3 photosynthesis physiology. Susanne also developed the equally widely used C4 photosynthesis model. She also demonstrated that Rubisco can be a major limitation to both C3 and C4 plants and hence is not in excess. She is an elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, the Royal Society of London and Member of the German National Academy of Science. She received many prestigious awards, including Charles F Kettering award from ASPB. Susanne is a member in both the C4 Rice Engineering project and also the Realizing Improved Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE) project, which are two prominent photosynthesis engineering consortiums internationally.
