C4 photosynthesis: from evolutionary innovation to ecological diversity

●主讲人

Colin Osborne

Prof. Colin Osborne, Prof. of University of Sheffield. Colin received his PhD with Prof. Steve Long in the University of Essex in 1996. Then, he continued his research in Sheffield and stayed in Sheffield until now. Colin’s research aims to understand how environmental and internal factors limit photosynthesis and plant productivity, how evolution and crop breeding have overcome the limitations, and the importance of productivity for the biology of plants in wild ecosystems and cultivated fields. Colin’s work spans from genes to the globe, and utilizes a broad spectrum of approaches, with recent emphasis on comparative experiments and global geographical analyses. Colin also conducted systematic study on the evolution and ecology of C4 plants, the domestication of crops, the control of growth by source and sink strengths, and the recruitment of trees into grasslands. Working as a photosynthesis ecophysiologist, Colin provides a unique angle to understand how plants adapt to different environments and hence offers new insights regarding crop improvement under different climates.
