Evolution of C3-C4 intermediate photosynthesis in the Brassicaceae

Prof. Dr. Andreas Weber, Prof. of Plant Biochemistry and Head of Institute of Plant Biochemistry of Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, director of the Center of Excellence on Plant Sciences, Elected Member of German National Academy of Sciences “Leopoldina”, Member of the Charles F. Kettering Award Committee of American Society of Plant Biologists, Chairperson of the Section Plant Physiology and Molecular Biology of German Botanical Society and Senior Editor of Plant, Cell & Environment. Andreas’ earlier research characterized the metabolite transporters on chloroplast membrane and now focuses on studying evolution and regulation of C4 photosynthesis. Work from Andreas and his colleagues demonstrated that photorespiration connects C3 and C4 photosynthesis, found the sodium proton transporter as a major component of C4 photosynthesis and identified new cis- and trans regulatory factors controlling expression level and cell specificity of C4 genes. Recently, Andreas’ group designed a synthetic bypass pathway for natural photorespiration and demonstrated its operation in Arabidopsis thaliana, demonstrating a great potential of synthetic biology in the current effort of improving photosynthesis for greater efficiency.
