Comparison of mesophyll cell and guard cell photosynthesis in Arabidopsis thaliana
Boon Leong Lim
Dr. Boon Leong Lim is an associate professor at the School of Biological Sciences, The University of Hong Kong. He had completed his B.Sc. (Biochemistry) at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1990, and had obtained his D. Phil (Biochemistry) from the University of Oxford in 1994. Dr. Lim has published over 50 original articles and his group current research interests focus on the study of energy conversion and carbon metabolism in plant with the aim of improving energy efficiency, growth and yield of plants. Earlier he shows that over expression of AtPAP2 increases photosynthesis and biomass production. Dr. Leong’s group uses the ATP fluorescence sensor to monitor the changes of ATP concentrations in mitochondria and chloroplast and found that there is no import of ATP into chloroplast in mature leaves. He demonstrates that the NADH generated from photorespiratory pathway can be a substantial portion of the reducing power for the mitochondria respiration, with the excess reducing power used for generation of malate. Recently, he shows that the sugar generated from the mesophyll cell can be transported into the guard cell, which generates ATP by mitochondria; while the ATP is used to power the guard cell movement.
